What is podiatry?

Podiatrists deal with assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of foot and lower limb disorders.

Podiatry is a modern term that encompasses chiropody. The term podiatry reflects the extra areas now covered by podiatrists, for example biomechanical evaluation.

We tend to take our feet for granted, but the foot is a highly complex structure which can develop problems that can affect a person's overall health and wellbeing.

What does treatment involve?
Your first visit will involve a consultation to evaluate the cause of your problem and the most appropriate treatment.
Follow-up appointments last approximately one hour and are scheduled according to your needs.

Treatment in a biomechanical clinic involves examination of your legs and feet. Examination will be static (while lying on a couch) and active (while walking) to allow the podiatrist to observe how the whole body moves.

Depending on the diagnosis the podiatrist may suggest an orthoses (orthitics), prescribe specific exercises, or work directly on the feet. A combination of treatment may be prescribed depending on the presenting complaint.
